Angell Town community safety meeting

Dear Neighbour,

Last month’s fatal stabbing of 20-year-old Salem Koudou shocked and saddened us all as another young person in the borough lost their life to violence.

I’m writing to invite you to a meeting on Thursday September 3 that will be an opportunity to discuss community safety and recent events in your neighbourhood. It will take place online between 6-7.30pm on the Teams app, and you can join the meeting by clicking here :

In July, we launched the Lambeth Made Community initiative that saw us hold a series of meetings which allowed residents to discuss important community issues. Councillors and officers of the council have been present at these online events, alongside community and voluntary organisations, but the focus has been on listening to your concerns.

In autumn, the council will be launching its strategy for Lambeth Made Safer: a borough-wide public health approach to help young people impacted by violence and prevent violence against women and girls. Community involvement in this programme is vital as it will help to make Lambeth safer and give residents, organisations and councillors the chance to discuss local safety concerns and propose solutions.

There are a number of free online and telephone based support services for anybody who feels affected by violence in our communities. Please share this information with friends and family:

Young Minds provide support for young people experiencing loss and offers advice for parents (call 0808 802 5544 or visit youngminds.org.uk).

Kooth is Lambeth’s new online support service for young people offering support at weekends, and live chat support with professionals until 10pm.

Mind Ed (minded.org.uk) for Families provides support and guidance for parents.

Victim Support (0808 168 9291) provide a telephone support line and online support for parents, professionals and young people who have witnessed crime. Victim Support also have live online chat: victimsupport.org.uk/help-and-support/young-victims-crime

Contact Refuge on 0808 2000 247 if you are suffering from abuse by your partner and require discreet assistance.

Violent crime leaves too many of our young people unable to fulfil their potential and causes serious trauma to families and communities that will stay with them forever. I passionately believe in the strength of our communities and the value of the local bonds that tie our neighbourhoods together.

Lambeth Made Community meetings launch in Coldharbour ward

Lambeth Council has launched new Lambeth Made Community meetings so that residents, organisations and councillors in every ward in the borough can build bonds, better share information, discuss how to address key issues and meet local needs.

The new ward-based forums started last month in Vassall ward and on the Angell Town estate, and have a particular focus on community safety issues including domestic violence, crime affecting young people and neighbourhood policing in support of the borough wide public health approach to tackling serious youth violence.

Community involvement in the cross-borough partnership project to tackle violence against young people, Lambeth Made Safer, is essential. The new Lambeth Made Community meetings will help meet that important aim, as well as present local people, organisations and councillors to discuss other hyperlocal concerns.

Cllr Jacqui Dyer, Lambeth Council’s cabinet member for Jobs, Skills and Community Safety leads the council’s work with the community, the police, our partners and the Mayor of London to combat crime in Lambeth. Her role includes addressing youth violence, community safety, crime reduction programmes, tackling violence against women and girls and tackling anti-social behaviour and hate crime.

Cllr Dyer said: “We really believe in the strength of our communities and the value of the local bonds that tie our neighbourhoods together. The goodwill, dedication and passion people in Lambeth have shown in very quickly stepping up and supporting their local communities during the coronavirus crisis has been incredible.

“We now need to build on that community spirit. We know that dealing with big social issues can be daunting, be that structural discrimination, economic disadvantage or tackling serious youth violence. But by creating these new Lambeth Made Community meetings we can start to break down the issues and look at the very real day to day impact on people’s lives.

“Not only are our residents willing to step up, but as a council we can bring community organisations, our public sector partners like the police and NHS and ward councillors to the table to share information, insight and resource to address issues at very local levels. We must to work together to find solutions.”

The first Lambeth Made Community meeting in Coldharbour ward takes place on Thursday, August 27. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic the meeting will be held via Microsoft teams from 6pm to 8pm.

Cllr Dyer said: “We are holding these meetings at a time that we hope will allow a fair representation across our different communities. We also want as many community leaders, voluntary and community sector partners, parents and young people as possible to take part.”
